I have a pomeranian or so I was told it was pure bred. At 3months he was 8lbs now at 51/2 months, he's about 12-13lbs. He really looks like a german sherpard but a mini version. Of course he isn't or he'd be much bigger, but are there any way to tell what it can be mixed with?

There is no way to tell by looking. Usually the guess is correct, but sometimes it is not. People base those guesses on known past occurrences. At this point, we don't know enough about all the genetic interactions of breeds to tell. What if a dog which seemed to be purebred mixed with another? The genetic variance which may have skipped several generations just showed up in your dog. The same can be true of muts. There is no way to tell by looking. Blood work won't even tell at this point in time.

Well, what we did with our mutt dog was when we took him to the vet, asked what breeds they thought he was. We found him as a puppy wandering the streets so we have no way to find his parents. Taking the dogs who live in the town we found him in into consideration, we are guessing he is part german shephard part lab and a whole other bunch of breeds because his parents most likely weren't purebreds.

The AKC breed standard says the average weight of a pom is 3-7 pounds. You can look that up more if you would like, I put the site in my reference.

Who told you it was a purebred? Did you get it straight from the breeder? If you have any other questions e-mail me or whatever>> jackie_smackie_2009@yahoo.com

if you have a train eye may be you can tell but most likely not. l have a st Bernard, lab mix and he has all the looks of a st. Bernard to most people but they do not know he is mix. but l can tell what he is mix with and even the vet did not know until l told him, l also seen the mom and dad. he could fool some people but a trained dog breeder can't be fooled.

No...most likely he is just a poorly bred pup..sorry, dont mean that as a mean comment.. but if people do not use good quality breeding stock the pups will come out looking different than the breed standard. 12 pounds is not big for a pom..

yes probably just poor breeding you should ask to see the parents and check out the breeding facilatys before you buy a pup. But a trined eye can usually tell what is in a mixed breed.

You could look at the face or look at things in your dog that other dogs don't have and go to a library and look at pictures of different dogs and find out what is your dog mixed with.

ask your vet.

if he is purebred, the seller should be able to give you papers. also ask to see the parents.
