I recently found a cat outside in my yard that didn't look like an outside cat. It's a long-haired persian that's been declawed. I've put an ad in the paper to find its owner and haven't heard anything. I called the local animal shelter and they were NOT helpful at al!!

How could I find out at no cost to me if this cat is microchipped?

I really want to find the owner because I'm sure they must be missing it, I don't mind taking care of it until I find it, but am coming up stumped!!

Animal control, Humane Society, or a local vet should have the equipment to scan for the microchip(if the cat has one). They should not charge anything for this service. Problem is, even if the cat is chipped, they may not be able to determine who owns the cat since most of the chips only record a serial number and from what my vet tells me, the owner has to pay to have their information registered for that serial number.

First of all, I think you're a good person for being concerned about this cat - I am sure he's owner is frantically looking for him too.

Go to any vet - they will have the hand scanner that "reads" if a cat or a dog has microchip. The service is free. Also the ASPCA will do it for free too - but call around for a vet whose got the scanner.

Also, why not stick flyers around your neighborhood? I'm thinking that a declawed cat would not have wandered far from its home - he might live nearby!

I don't know about it not costing you but most vets have the devices to find microchips. Call one first and see what it will cost. If the cat does have a chip and you do find the owner don't you think they would be willing to pay you back? After all, that's why they had the cat micro chipped in the first place. Good for you for caring, even if it's not your cat!!

the nearest humane society will be able to help you for sure! you might want to call ahead and make sure there isnt a charge though..other than that, there is a website you can check, does the cat have a collar on? if so do you see a tag that has this on it? 24petwatch.com?? when they are microchipped they are given an id number and usually the pet owner will register the animal on this site..hope this helps!!

Most Humane Societies or Animal Shelters have a scanner to check for microchips, some veterinary hospitals also have scanners. You may want to call around to see who has one first. Good Luck.

PS-scanning a pet for a microchip should not cost you anything.

Call the shelter and discuss this with the MANAGER of the place. Tell them you want to adopt the cat immediately if the cat has no owner. That you are now regretting your decision to take the cat to them now that you've been told that the people at the shelter can't be bothered calling you before trying to euthenize. You want to adopt the cat now and leave with it. Beter yet, go down and discuss this with the manager. File a complaint if they tell you their lack of staffing means the cat will be killed while a viable potential owner is there to adopt. Bypass the entire waiting period and just TALK to the person running the shelter, right there in person. If they give you grief, tell them you're fully able to go to the local paper and raise holy hell about this, naming names and getting it all out in public via the media.

Call up your local vet and ask them if they will do it at no charge. I am sure most would rather see an animal back with its owner than at the animal shelter.

Take the cat to the closest vet and they usually have a scanner. It shouldn't cost you anything. If you feel their ear you can sometimes feel a hard spot. Kudos to you! I'm sure you will make someone VERY HAPPY when you find the cats owner! I wish everyone was that kind to animals!

Ring up or take him to a local vet. They have a little machine that detect microchips
