When you install the beta version of vista, did it ask you if you will upgrade your windows to vista or just a clean install? is it the same with the final version of vista?

yes it did, and I assume it will contimue to do so. The Beta2 that they launched did it, and so does RC2, as well as the corporate pre-launch to allow big companies to work with it and help with development.

XP did it as well, you could boot from cd or insert it and upgrade the OS once it had loaded by running the CD.

If your going to try Beta2 i would recommend installing on another partition as a clean install and use the Vista bootloader to dual boot.

Hope this helps.

Another point is that not every peripheral has a driver for vista. It might be better to install a separate copy of vista on another hard drive so you can dual boot

The Beta version should prompt the end user. I got a prompt asking if I wanted to upgrade when I ran the Beta.
