Take a favorite toy, blankie, binkie, etc. along...Talking about what is going to happen beforehand...also a good idea, buying a "Going to the Doctor" book or a play doctor doll to show him/her what is going to happen.... the nurses usually give out a lollipop or sticker too and that calms my 2 year old right away...good luck!!!!!!

Distraction. Try having him look away from the injection site and tell him to practice blowing out his birthday candles. Tell him to take a big breath, close his eyes, and blow as hard as he could. (Use your hand as an alternative - hold up a finger or your hand and tell him to try to knock it over by blowing on it as hard as he could.) Not only is the concentration of trying to knock over your hand with his blowing a distraction, but the deep breathing is calming. Then, some kind of reward will enforce a positive experience.

Don't lie to him and tell him there's no shots or "owies" - when he finds out otherwise, he'll be MAD.

Tylenol or some kinda of pain reliever a half hr before the appt.. Toys to distract him, a quick fast doctor to give the injection's, a big hug and maybe a lollipop or some kind of treat for being such a brave boy!!.. Works for my boy.

good luck

Try talking to him or her about the shot, instead of not saying anything and then him or her freaking out. Otherwise if you do not think thats a good way to go try giving him or her a sucker to take his or her mind off of what the nurse is about to do. It worked with my 4.

Be up front and tell her it will hurt for just a sec and then it will be over. Also, we have a standing rule in my house that if someone gets a shot, we all get ice cream. They don't mind because they know that it only lasts for a sec and they love getting ice cream!

Look at him directly in his face and sing his favorite song. Ask him to sing along with you. I did this to my son and he did not even know that he was getting a shot until it was over. :-)
