What a smart woman! Coming to Australia! The short answer is you won't be dissapointed wherever you go.
Sydney is a great, cosmopolitan city with sparkling beaches and glitzy nightlife. A great club and restaurant scene with plenty to do for the family including, beaches and zoos and of course the fabulous harbour.
Melbourne is a more high-bro city with museums and a strong cafe scene.
Just out of sydney are the Blue Mountains, great for day trips of bushwalking in the Aussie Bush.
Queensland is tropical with white sandy beaches and of course the brilliant Great Barrier Reef, a must!
You can also go skiing in Australia in the Snowy Mountains in the lower NSW or Victoria.
For a real Aussie experience, you need to head in land. The Kakadu national park will amaze you.
You will need years and years to see all of Australia but for a proper holiday (and to make the long flight worthwile) you will need at least 3 weeks.

Have a great trip!

It depends how much you can afford.
I live in Canberra, Australia and, personally, I think it's great for a holiday, there are many memorial sights for the more mature but there is plenty to see for children also (ie, zoos, parks, science and learning places such as questacon ect.).
However, it depends on your family, what they enjoy and what they want to see.
Sorry this may not be of much help, but I'm only sixteen and I don't go on holidays much so I'm not very accustomed to it...

If you can afford it Hire a Mobile Home, preferably one that is dual fuel. LPG and Petrol. The cheapest fuel source is the LPG option.
You will have the best of both accommodation and transport. You will be able to stop and start at your own pace and spend time enjoying the sites and taking photos rather than rushing at everyone else pace to get on the coach to be whisked away to the next stop.
Ask me for my email address and I can send you information on where to go what to see and the name of hire companies
