Dehydration can cause constipation. But other things can be causing it, including not enough fiber in the diet
lack of physical activity (especially in the elderly)
medications
milk
irritable bowel syndrome
changes in life or routine such as pregnancy, aging, and travel
abuse of laxatives
ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement
specific diseases or conditions, such as stroke (most common)
problems with the colon and rectum
problems with intestinal function .
problems with pelvic muscles
diabetes
Taking a walk outside or in the mall may help, especially if you have not been exercising because of an illness or busy lifestyle. Some medications can cause it, including over-the counter drugs like antacids. It sounds like you do have a problem, it is more normal to have a bowel movement at least 3 times a week. If you want to know when you are dehydrated, signs are dry, warm skin, dizziness, headache, irritability, dry mouth, constipation. If your stool is hard and dry, dehydration could be the culprit. But if you are having diarrhea-like stools, the constipation could be caused by something else.

Once a week is definitely not normal...more like 2 or 3 times a day for optimal health. Beyond that, when you DO go, if it is not soft and easy to pass...versus hard pellets or "rocks," that is ANOTHER sign that things aren't right. Dehydration is certainly a factor, but more likely it is not enough fiber in your diet. You need to make some serious lifestyle changes.
