Actually counselors work more as listeners and help people themselves find the solutions to their own problems. They listen, but they don't give advice. They teach all kinds of things from study skills to coping mechanisms. They do give information and help people make healthier decision, and to see themselves more clearly. Of course, there are many other aspects to counseling. Being a good counselor involves much more than liking the work - you also need to develop a very specific set of skills, usually obtained through a bachelors degree in psychology and then after that often a masters degree in some aspect of counseling or in psychology itself. Many universities offer such programming.

You may be able to learn a little about such work by getting involved in a volunteer counseling situation where you may be offered some basic training. Peer mentoring and peer counseling may also be options that can give you a little insight into this field. There are many options from school counseling to addictions counseling to counseling for eating disorders, family counseling, group counseling, grief counseling, vocational counseling, career counseling, etc.

Here are a couple of links to get you started. Best of luck with your plans.
