I have a 2 year old large mix breed dog that is constipated, Can I give my dog Milk of Magnesia or Karo Syrup to help relieve his constipation fast? Are there any other ways I can help him now?

If your dog shows any signs of illness, he must be brought to the veterinarian immediately, since there could be a blockage of the intestinal tract.

The following will help your dog:

Add canned pumpkin to every meal. The dosage can range from 1/8 tsp for a small dog to 1/2 tsp for a large dog, depending upon results. Start with 1/4 tsp for a medium and large dog, increasing the amount depending on stool results.

Or you can do the following:

Add wheat bran to every meal. Follow the same dosages as for the pumpkin. For increased taste, combine it with brewer's yeast.

Put your dog on a high fiber diet recommended by your veterinarian, changing foods slowly.

Add water to the food.

Keep the water dish clean and full of fresh water, to encourage your dog to drink more.

Supplement with brewer's yeast.

Supplement with acidophilus daily.

Supplement with folic acid.

Increase the dog's exercise.

Add vegetable enzyme to the food

Just about any of the spoon fed over the counter stuff will work. I've even given my dogs Peptobismal for upset tummies. Don't do that in this case though. Pepto will constipate. Try Metamucil but not Ex lax because that comes in chocolate form and we all know that chocolate is poison to dogs. You may still want to have your vet take a look in case there is any obstruction.

Hello, don't give him that, the best method is a 10 to 20 mil. dose of olive oil (vegtable oil will do ) twice a day also sprinkle on his food this does work, but if he is still constipated after 4-5 days take him to vet as something could be going wrong so good luck

Please don't attempt to treat this yourself in any way. Take the dog straight to the vet. It could well be a blockage caused by an ingested foreign object in the intestine (could be anything from a piece of bone to some foam from inside upholstery), or even bloat, which is caused by a torsion, or twist, in the bowel. Bloat is an extremely dangerous condition: a dog with this must be treated by the vet as soon as possible, otherwise it always results in death. You in particular must be vigilant in this regard, as larger breeds are more prone to bloat, as are deep-chested ones.

Hi. 2 tablespoons of Karo syrup everyday for 6 days should do it. Hmm, maybe a higher quality food? Lots of water and love.Uh oh, I sound like a dog food commercial! May things improve soon.

I would be very careful what household remedy you use for this condition. Give your vet a call and he should be able to recommend something over the phone.
Perhaps Pepto Bismol, I've used it for upset stomach's before and I have also used glycerine suppositories but then I have small dogs. I use the baby size so maybe you could use the adult size on a large breed dog.

You can give him canned pumpkin, make sure it is the plain Not the one with the spices. Give him 1/2 a can with his regular food. You can't overdose him on it. It is also good to keep on hand for diarrhea. Do this for a few days to get him back on track and make sure he is drinking plenty of water.

I can't top the advice stated by the users before me, but i would recommend keeping him away from carpet or other areas because after giving him any medicine or something, he will have to go to the bathroom more than usual and don't get mad at him because he will have no control over it.

please call your vet for advice with regard to your pet. Pepto Bismol is not for constipation, it is for diarrhea. Karo Syrup is sugar, not for constipation. Please call your vet to have your dogs problem diagnosed and treated properly.

Try some corn syrup. Not a bowlful, but just a spoonful.
