Yes, a scratching post is great, also there are these specially made tape that you put on your furniture that helps prevent cats from scratching. You can go to Petsmart and in the scratching post section they sell them. They look like big pieces of tape. Also, I have two cats and if they start putting their claws on the couch, I say NO firmly and move them away to their scratching post and imitate scratching. Now, they go to the scratching post for the most part. I even started putting their scratching pad under the food bowls so they scratch it when they are near their food.

I'm getting really tired of people saying spray their cats with water or yell at it. Sometimes I wish someone would spray all of you in the face and see how you like it! That's really Cruel! Anyways, What you need to do is...
1) What do you have for your cats to scratch on? They HAVE to scratch to maintain their claws. If you have scratching posts make sure that they are taller then where the scratches are on your furniture. Also, they make cardboard scratches that my cats love. Some cats like sisal, mine don't. Check out his page for ideas. There are also some good deals here:

I would also try putting some double sided tape on the furniture. They sell stuff in the stores, but it is usually expensive and double sided tape does the same thing.
Your cat won't want anything to do with the furniture after the tape is on it, but if you see them trying to scratch, I would pick them up and put them on the scratcher and imitate scratching. Cardboard boxes also work great. The create a hiding/play area for the and they are cheap or free at the liqueur store.
The soft claws work too, but if you have a difficult cat like I do, it just creates pain for you (HA HA).
One more thing... If you were thinking about declawing your poor Kitty (I hope you weren't) PLEASE Don't and check out this website if you are even remotely thinking about it!

Good LUCK!!

Buy your cat a scratching post or condo. I made mine with spare wood in the garage and left over new carpet from installation from a flooring store not far from my house. Every since providing a place for my cat that is all his own to lounge and scratch I have had not problems with scratching furniture. Good luck.

One, get one of those round whirligigs with a ball in it from Walmart or the pet shop--it's a scratch pad that has a ball that goes around it that the cat can play with. Twirl the ball around and kitty will catch on real quick. It's hard to explain, but the WalMart people will know what you are talking about. It is my cat's favorite toy! Really!
Two, get a clean spray bottle from WalMart, fill it with water and spray the cat with it (not in her eyes or on her face) whenever she scratches the furniture.

Get a nice cat tree. Cats need something to scratch to keep their claws healthy and because it is in their nature to mark objects in their territory. I got my cat a huge cat tree with a lot of levels, a condo, a ramp, and a tunnel. She loves it and stopped tearing apart the furniture and carpet after she had the cat tree to play on.

Scold him/her when he scratches the furniture. Spraying her/him with water a bit when they do it helps.
Be sure to have a scratching post/pad for him/her to use.
Praise him/her when they use the scratching post/pad instead of the furniture.
Cats are smart and he/she will learn not to scratch the furniture.

I've owned cats for over 45 years and have NOT had much luck with spraying them with water. When you're not home, there's no one to spray them.... Reading this article (link below) might help..... I've had the best luck with corrugated cardboard, sprinkled with cat nip. I buy pieces at pet stores made especially for this purpose..... I've discouraged cats from using furniture by covering the areas they've attacked with aluminum foil.

usually cats do this when they're angry and want your attention. spray the furniture with lavender or some other smelly spray. cats don't like perfumed odors. then give the kitty some love and a scratching post.

Stick double stick tape to where the cat is scratching. She wont like her paws getting stuck and will eventually stop.
