My parakeet is about one year old. She seems lonely and I was thinking about getting her a friend. I know I'll have to get a larger cage, but should the new bird be male or female?

I had the same problem with my little budgie. We had him for a while and he always seemed a little lonely. So eventually we went out and bought him a girlfriend. This made him soooo much happier. Best decision we ever made :)

I then realised I couland't stop at just 2... now we have 5! I've never seen our first budgie so happy. Budgies really are flock animals, I think more so then any other birds I've had. They just love playing around with friends their own size!

They all live in one (very large) cage and get to fly freely around the bird room (aka computer room) everyday.

You could get either sex to be a friend for your budgie. Budgies wont mate unless you provide a nesting box, so a boyfriend for your girl would be fine. Another girl would also be fine, although they might tend to interact less and be a little nippy or standoffish towards each other.

Just make sure you know that a new bird will probably mean your first bird will interact less with you (although not always!)

Good luck and I hope it works out well!

Let's see. I think if you take the time to train her, another companion would be unnecessary. Training 2 may be difficult because they would bond with each other rather than with you. A male might produce future chicks Compatibility doesn't always occur. Another female may not be compatible either. It's a risk you will have to face. Personification of any animal is something we do. Could your bird be bored or ignored? Is having 2 untamed birds in a cage what you are looking for? These are just ideas. Have a tweet year.

parakeet do like company but being that she has been the only bird in her cage for a year she probably will not accept another bird in her cage, it could even lead to the death of the new bird. if you get another bird for company that bird should have its own cage but put it right beside the parakeet you already have. also try getting new toys for your parakeet she might just be bored.

She would probably like that. I'm thinking a female would be easier for her to get along with just so they don't mate. Also do you have a lot of toys in her cage? I've had parakeets as pets in the past and they always seem to really like little mirrors. They'll bond with it and think it's another bird.

Getting another parakeet would be a good idea. Probably a female would be better. If you don't want to get another, mirrors work fine. If you do get another, be sure to introduce them outside the cage, and do it slowly. If you notice that your parakeet is being agressive, keep them in separate cages, but right next to eachother, and then try again later.

Get her a mate. Birds are flock animals and like company. Some bird spices are monogamous and mate for life. A bigger cage is a good idea too. It will give them room to bond.

If the Bird is friendly you should know that getting it a mate will usaly cause the bird not to wantt o be friendly to humans, becuse they will rather mate with a bird. But if you say your bird is lonly becuse you dont handle it much you might as well get it a mate. it can be the same sex unles your interested in them having more babies.

he's chilly. in the event that they fluff themselves like that (all birds do) it potential they are chilly. he would be plenty happier while he has an more advantageous half simply by fact they don't prefer to be saved on my own. verify the warmth lamp does not touch the cage and proceed to feed him often. All birds are obdurate. that's not that they are undesirable tempered; they do exactly not care. you're taking sturdy care and socializing him properly, yet there will be lots of moments while he merely stares. he would be greater vocal and lively once you purchase yet another chook.

If you want to have chicks then you should get a male. But if you don't then get a female. I have 4 at home. Good luck!
