If you have XP then you don't have DOS!!!

XP does not run on DOS. so basically u do not have DOS on your system. But if you have your CD of XP you can boot from the cd and go in the recovery console or u may go for auto recovery of XP. Auto recovery tries to recover your OS from any corruption or some system file problem. While Recovery console creates a DOS type environment in which your hard disk drives are mounted (assigned a drive letter) and also your optical drive (CD/DVD drive) is mounted and you can get kind of a simulated DOS type environment there.

Windows XP doesn't run of a DOS environment, the cmd prompt was only included as an afterthought.
You will need to boot off a dos 6.0, windows 3.1, windows 95, or windows 98 disc.

There are way to get to dos, i.e. a bootable cd, or bootable flash drive.

However, if you cannot get into windows, how would getting into dos help.
Dos cannot read an NFTS partition.

If you want to re-format, you could use the windows xp cd.

If you want to copy your files off your har ddrive, there are some dos programs that allow you to read an nfts partition, hwoever, therer are easier ways. For insatnc,e downlosd knoppix; it is linnux on cd and boot to it; that can give you access to your files to copy to an external harddrive or cd-writer.

Shut down computer upon restart hold F1 or
to restore is F10. ( recommended ) and follow instructions . F10 will restore it back to factory settings but you may lose programs that you yourself installled on the computer

All windows programs are based on win 95 which is self fixing.
XP has NT components which were the upgraded 95 so it should fix itself eventually . I have had this problem myself but mine has righted itself after a few shut downs.
