I have quite a hyperactive, distractive mind that only works properly when it's doing an intense activity. If it's not doing an intensive activity, it constantly seeks one. Consequently, I find it very difficult to settle down enough to go to bed in the first place. When I do, my mind tends to think of various topics constantly, so it's difficult to relax.

Does anyone else have a similar problem? If so, how do you get yourself from normal everyday life (or in my case, hyperactive daily life!) - into a relaxed mood so you can go to bed and sleep?

Thanks.

Develop a bedtime routine. For instance, say you want to go to sleep at 10p.m. Start your routine at 9p.m. Wash your face, brush/floss your teeth, take out your clothes for the next day. All of those things require phyical activity. Then you're going to want to take it down a notch. Maybe write out your plan for the next day - if it's down on paper, it helps to quiet your mind so your mind is not racing with plans for tomorrow. Then go sit in a nice a comfy chair and read a non-stimulating book for a few minutes. Now go to bed - with no television, book or any other distraction.

It may also help to keep a tape recorder by your bedside. If your mind does start racing, you can record your thoughts and then let them go so they don't keep you up all night!

Routine is an important part of your sleep hygiene. Best of luck to you!

Routine is REALLY important. If she does not know what's coming next, it unlikely that she will cooperate =) Here we give him dinner early (before he is too tired he won't even eat) like between 5:30-6 pm. Than we give him a warm bath , read a couple of books together in bed. I breastfeed him, sing some songs and put him to bed. We have been doing this since he is 1 month old so when we say it's night-night time he knows exactly what's coming. Good luck

I take a nice warm bath and always drink something before bedtime, plus use the toilet. I then make it quiet and leave a night light 2 rooms down the hall. I close my eyes and shop in my mind, I know my way around my favorite stores and I look at different things in my mind and try to think of things I need and what I should get to make the most sense. The next thing I know I am waking up and it is morning...it works for me and is more fun than counting sheep!

I also read at bedtime... it takes my mind off of real life and allows me to completely relax.
