"Make" a cat do anything? "Make"? You must not have been owned by your cat for very long or you'd know it doesn't work that way! Cats will do as they please, and humans have to get over it.

The best to socialize cats is when they are young by exposing them to other people and animals. Kittens learn faster then cats but that doesn't mean cats can't still learn. Don't force your cat to socialize like locking them in or they will remember it as a bad experience and become even more skittish. When strangers are over let your cat hide if she wants too, that is part of cats instincts. When he or she comes out let her know it is alright talk to them or give them a treat. If she or he does go up to your visitor let them pet the cat cautiously so it doesn't feel threatened. The most important thing is to take it slow, make sure it is a good experience for everyone. Handling your cat and spending time with them yourself helps too. Last of all remember your cat has a personality too. Some cats are just not social. And there is nothing you can do to change that.

Well, some cats are naturally skittish and shy of everything. But you can help socialize a cat by simply exposing the cat to human company in a quiet and serene environment. Like when the family is settled to watch TV, let the cat in the room with you and allow her to choose the spot she will settle in to either watch or dose. When you're at the computer, take the cat with you in the room and again let her choose her own spot and activity. Handle her gently and often so she'll come to associate you with good feelings. But some cats will never be comfortable with noisy riotous kids and adults and and strangers... they like calm.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, cats are very different than dogs. They are not pack animals so they tend to be more loners. Play with your cat and try to find out what it likes to do. If you bring people over and it's loud, most likely your cat will be afraid and even less social than normal. If you want, slowly introduce new people to your cat in a quiet room and let the cat approach the new person, give their hand to smell and slowly pet the cat, maybe have them play with a string together. Cats can't resist string even from a stranger. If she doesn't respond well, it might just be better to keep her away from people and just accept her as she is. It's not personal, cats can just be more tempermental and selective as to whom they trust.

Well I tried to my cat social when we have people over as she tends to make a beeline for the ironing board in the basement and soon as she hears the dog bark and a strange voice. I didn't have much success as she always gets her way and just makes a mad dash back downstairs after I bring her up.

It's very difficult to train a cat because they have a high dignity threshold.

My cat is VERY unsocial. We have to warn children not to try to pet the cat because they'll get hissed at and then swiped and clawed.

You don't so much have an influence on your cat's behavior. Your cat will be what it will be, and it's your job to adapt to it.
