Hi there-
There is this interesting website that gives you information as well as variations of your last name and a general idea of the origin. I too have a hard last name, so I did get a website a long time ago that had some information but I can't seem to find it in my links. I'll have to look again.

However, here are a few to start you off:

http://www.last-names.net/Articles/Place.asp
http://www.nameseekers.co.uk/surname.htm
http://genealogy.about.com/od/surnames/a/surname_meaning.htm

Hope this helps! Good Luck!

There are a lot of sites that will tell you the different countries a suname has come from; however, you will need to do a little more research to see which country you are actually from. If nothing else, you can try to find other last-name search engines online.

Here are a few sites to start with:

http://www.searchforancestors.com/surnames/origin/

Have you tried doing a web search? I just did one for my maiden name & discovered that it is Welsh (from Wales). And I found web sights for several other people with the same last name spelt the same way. So try that, it doesn't cost anything except a few min. of your time.
By the way my name was Mattocks!!

Mine is too! Sorry to tell you this, but I don't think there is one. You could try the free trial version at the link below, but to keep going back to it will cost you money after a while. Good luck finding one though!

Depending on what the last name is, you may be able to find it in a dictionary.
Or, you could try doing a wikipedia search for it.

You can go to Ancestry.com and do basic searches and get information on names without paying for a membership.
