Sounds like your tappets need adjusting, have a garage look at it and give you a price.Maybe your millage is high, and the engines a bit worn. There adjusted by different size shims.

Are you sure it's the engine? I mean dead sure?
I've got a Megane and something kept making a dreadful noise. Thought it was the engine too. Turns out is was the exhaust pipe under the car. Renault put something of a shield between the pipe and the rest of the car and that pipe makes a turn at some point. My problem was that the shield was bent and touching the pipe, the pipe vibrating from the engine. You should look there too, because it is a simple problem and might save you a lot of trouble.
Also, check the wheels. They make funny noises sometimes and those noises could go faster as speed increases.
Check all you can before blaming it on the engine, because in my experience the engine was never the one to blame.

Tappets would be my guess too, some fords were bad for engine noise as they had hydraulic tappets that never seemd to position right. BMW's M40 engine was a tappety one too.

Try a bit oil adidtive like molyslip which makes the oil stick to the moving parts better.

That is the valve lifters that you are hearing making that noise, seems like after a while all cars, trucks, and suv's start to make that noise.

sounds like one of your hydraulic tappets has come adrift.(if its a petrol)without looking at the car its hard to properly diagnose.do a compression check and may require head removal......ross
