My husband and I are having a quarrel about what a dry wine is. I say dry means sweet, he says it means it has a bite. Neither of us really know anything about wines (obviously) but we are trying different ones each week.

You have it backwards, and your husband is off in left field. Dry is the opposite of sweet. This can be because the grape juice started out with a low sugar content, or it can be because more of the sugar has been fermented into alcohol. Your husband is probably confusing the term with the tannin content, a common "rookie mistake." Next booze run you take, ask for a dry Alsatian Riesling and a halbtrocken (half-dry) German Riesling. You'll love both, and the education will also be worth it. If you can fit a third, and more expensive, Riesling into your budget, you can try an Eiswein (Ice wine-the grapes are picked in the first frost and are frozen a bit) with dessert.

The sugar in natural fruit juices such as grapes is used by yeasts to produce CO2 and alcohol. When the yeast have used up all the sugar in the juice we say the wine produced is "dry". Dry wines are therefore not sweet, and a well balanced dry wine with full body and aroma is a rare find

Dry wines have little perceptible sugar (sweetness) taste - puckering, but wonderful!

If it's a zero, then it's dry. Without any sweetness. Your husband is right.
