The other people answered the question pretty much .. I just wanted to add that you can add Distinctive ringing to your phone line, it is a second phone number for the same phone line, about $5 per month, much cheaper then getting a new phone line and wiring a new jack. the second number will ring with a diffrent pattern then the number you have now, hence distinctive ringing, this way when it rings you will know if its a voice or fax call and dont have to answer the phone to a fax machine, or have to waste time having people call you first to tell you they are going to send you over a fax and what not..

Sure it works. The answering machine should be set to answer on FEWER rings than the fax, so that the fax can "listen" for an incoming fax tone. If it hears it, the fax will seize control of the line. Speak you outgoing message slowly and leave a few seconds of nothing at the end to ensure the fax can "listen". I recently resolved a problem where the sending fax did not like my phone to ring 4 times. It kept timing out. I changed it to three and it now works fine...although I have to run a little faster to answer a call.

PS. Regardless of the type of fax you have, HP has a great tutorial at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=64986&rule=32740&lang=en&docname=bpu04072

it should as long as you give the fax machine enough time to pick up faxes before the answering machine picks them up.
