I am looking for a puppy. On the internet a place in Carmarthenshire which seems to sell lots of different breeds of puppy. I wondered if anyone knows if this is a puppy farm.

Yeah it's most likely a puppy mill. Good, licensed breeders only breed one certain breed at a time to insure that there are no "cross-mating" and produce mutts.

I am not sure if the website I went to is the same as where you are thinking of getting this puppy. It is in Europe somewhere and it is a county organization?? Even if it is the same, I would still be very leery about getting a dog there. They may be a good place that represents different breeders, but who knows if those breeders are legitimate, or not puppy farms or puppy mills. I would go in person to a place to be able to meet the people, the dogs, the dogs parents etc. and check the place out. If they are open about everything, they are probably reputable. If they aren't willing to show you around, see the dogs, etc., then I would leave right away and actually notify the authorities of where they are.
I got my 2 dogs from a rescue agency that rescues dogs from those horrid puppy mills. They also have dogs that have been turned in by their owners for various reasons. New baby, new home, death etc. So, I say go to a shelter or rescue agency to get a dog. Stay away from the Internet and places you can't personally see what you are getting.

CLUE NUMBER 1: they sell many breeds of puppies hobby breeders seldom have more than 2 breeds
Clue Number 2 they have more than one litter at a time (oh right they have many breeds that means many litters)
Clue number 3 they own both parents - most hobby breeders go for the best male they can find even if that means a stud fee.
clue number 4 if you call there first questions are not do you have a fence? or can you supply vet references? but cash or check? (fi they take credit cards they ARE a puppy mill)

without knowing anything but what you have said here, the chances this is a puppy farm are about 99.9%

If it's on the internet, and it's selling lots of different breeds of puppies, it's probably a puppy mill.
Operating over the internet, there isn't much of a chance for people wanting to buy a puppy to visit the site, or for being unregulated by governing organizations or inspections by the buyers.
I would steer clear of such places - to say they are abusive of their animals is an understatement. They barely treat them as living beings. Please do not support them. Talk to your vet, and ask them for references. They, hopefully, will only give you the names of breeders who raise their pups "under their feet." Another problem with mills is that they interbreed to the point that any genetic problems surface, and replicate.
Even better, go to Petfinders.com - and look for a rescue that specializes in the type of dog you want. That's a win-win situation, the puppy gets a loving home, and you find the puppy you want.
Good luck - and please remember to spay/neuter you pet.

The whole concept of BYB's and Puppy Millers is that they do not follow any of the things you asked, they breed any dogs in order to make a fast buck, regardless of any faults a dog may have. In answer to your questions, the anwers are of course: 1) They breed the dogs to make some money 2) They arn't trying to improve anything and infact do the opposite 3) the parents probably arn't registered 4) The puppies are probably dead, in a pound, or being used by more BYB's. 5) I can pretty much guarantee they don't know the answer, and don't care.

A reputable breeder will not breed more than two or three different breeds. (Personally I wouldn't buy from a breeder who breeds more than two different breeds of dog).

The best way to make sure the place your getting a puppy from is not a mill is to do an actual walk-through (Again, I wouldn't buy a dog from someplace I couldn't actually see)

I would stay away from places that sell many different breeds. Good breeders usually stick with no more than two or three. I actually would prefer a breeder who just has one breed of dog. If you go to http://www.dogs.about.com, you will find tips on how to choose a good breeder.Best to you.

Why not find a breeder yourself if you're really worried. One that will allow you to see the conditions under which the animals live as well as the parent animals.

Or better, check out the local animal shelter.

I would say that the first clue would be that they are breeding several different breeds . any reputable breeder will only breed one breed . and to answer your question yeah it sounds like it is . good luck.

Check with your local humane society and/or vet to find out if they have any information on this place. You're probably better off if you go to your local shelter and adopt; most provide vouchers for follow-up veterinarian care, which can be costly. Good luck!
