1. Take chicken across river, go back.
2. Take grain across river, bring chicken back.
3. Leave chicken, take fox across river. Go back.
4. Bring chicken across again.
Or, taking into account that the fox can swim, he takes the grain and the fox (swimming behind) across, then goes back for the chicken.
Or, if he has some way to do it, he wraps the grain in a waterproof container, drags it behind the boat, has the fox swim, and does it all in one trip.
Considering how small a chicken is, however, this is a dumb puzzle. The grain may be a big pile, but the chicken can surely sit on the guy's lap, and the fox should be agile enough to sit on the grain.

He takes the chicken to the other side of the river, over there, leaving the fox and the grain, because the grain is safe with the fox, over here.
He then comes back from over there to get the fox, still leaving the grain over here.
He gets the fox to the other side of the river, over there, but when he leaves the fox over there, he brings back the chicken over here, so the fox cannot eat it.
Let’s recapitulate: the fox is now on the other side of the river, over there, the chicken is in the boat on its way back over here and the grain has not moved yet from over here.
After the man brought back the chicken from over there, he leaves it over here and takes the grain.
Now, the grain is moving at last and the chicken is pissed off because he keeps crossing the river and getting nowhere.
Once the grain has joined the fox over there, the man comes back over here to get the chicken over there and go on his merry way.

Take the chicken over then he goes back over and get the grain. Once he gets over the river he takes back the chicken. Puts the chicken down. Brings the fox over. Comes back and gets the chicken. Problem solved!

Take the grain first and then the fox and then the chicken. Because the fox will not eat the grain.

first you get the chicken to cross the river first, the fox won't eat the grain. then come back and take the fox to cross the river, this time take the chicken back to the grain, then take the grain and cross the river again, finally go back and take the chicken to cross the river and voila!

He takes the chicken across, then he gets the fox and takes it across. He picks the chicken back up and takes it back... then the man gets the grain --leaving the chicken--. He drops off the grain --leaving the fox and the grain-- then he goes back and gets the chicken!!!
It's the only way that makes sense to me!!
