Pro: They definitely hold odor better, but unfortunetly, your cat will be the one who makes the choice. Some cats just don't like them covered. Others like the privacy.
I have 6 cats and all of my boxes are covered, and none of them seem to mind.
Con: they cost more. That was the only real con I had with them, but they were worth it.

I can't think of any cons, only pros. you don't have to look at the contents, the odor is way less, the cats have privacy, they don't flip litter all over the place, but really, the biggest pro for me is the odor. I only have to scoop once a day now instead of every time they poop. I use the scoop away multi cat litter, only have to change it once a week, it smells great, sort of clean like laundry soap. Before I had an open box and was using regular cheap clay litter, and my house stunk big time, it was horrible. No problems at all now.

i cant think of any cons. but i guess it depends on you cat. my cats love them. if someone is watching or even glances at them in a litter box they get out. so with the enclosed they get the privacy they want plus it contains the smell a little bit for you. and you dont have to see poop when you walk past it.

My two cats do not seem to mind it. They would poop with the whole world watching. It cost me $14 for a covered box. They have a filter on top and we clean it every day anyway.

cuts down on odor, add backing soda to the bottom of pan before adding litter it also helps with the odor. Good luck

Pros:

Cats can't fling litter out of the box onto your floor.
Cats can't pee over the edge of the box onto your floor

Cons:
Some cats don't like them and won't use them.
It puts the waste out of sight and out of mind for you and you might not clean enough.
