the area around the tattoo about 2 inches or so will be a dark bruised red purple colour. it will be ***** and oozy. (just oozy probably means youre overdoing the lotion a bit) The first thing to do is stop any aftercare you are doing. DO NOT PUT MORE LOTION ON. Leave it alone and let it breathe. IF you have concerns go to your artist NOT a doctor. A tattoo professional has specific training related to your tattoo a doctor does not. If its infected they will know immediately. If you did not get it at a reputable shop it doesnt matter, any reputable shop will be able to point you in the right direction.

If its simply fresh and its just a bit itchy and red put a little Prep H on it, will help with that no probs. Also placement can be a factor with redness and swelling. fresh tattoos on the legs can be swollen simply because of the placement.

It's normal for a new tattoo to be a bit red and swollen. Sometimes there's a bit of fluid, and sore.
Like any infection, you usually find off-coloured puss, extremely red, swollen, and very painful...get it checked out by the tattoo artist or your doctor.

If you no longer see normal Skin color only Tattoo colors: it can feel like having pressure or rash or your having fever or you could even see Puss(yellow)
If none of these apply but you just don't feel or it doesn't look right, go see a Dr,

it isnt likely that its is just infected, You will have a allergic reaction to the dye. It will be swollen and sore and if this happens take benadryl and go to the emergency room. Red dye isnt a friend to human skin and causes extreme infection and swelling.

if you go to a reputable tatt artist and follow the after care you shouldnt have any problems. ive had a few done and never had any problems altough they are all in diff places and took different times to heal. most important thing is to do your research and get it done by a proffessional.

if it is looking gunky you might just be putting too much cream on,try applying a small amount 2/3 times a day.
p.s. if that don't work see your doctor.
good luck.

assuming you had it done professionally, you dont have much to worry about... just keep it clean and apply an antibiotic ointment... it may become inflamed for awhile, but that isnt all that unsual...
