Usually there is no need to clip finches wings. They are usually for show like canaries are. When dad and I were breeding finches, we never clipped wings. We only clip the Budgies and Cockatiel wings because those kinds of birds are the ones you could tame and have as a close pet. Actually it's stupid to clip finches wings. It's such a small bird.

The only time it is necessary to clip a finches wings is when they are being sold at a pet store. Their wings should be clipped so they don't escape, but when you buy one it won't need to have it's wings clipped regularly because a finch is not the type of bird that will ever be tame enough to come out of it's cage anyway and socialize. Trust me I have two Zebra finches.

Do NOT ever clip a Finch's wings. PERIOD.
"Myth #10 – You can clip a finches' wings to make it tame.
No. No. No. No!! Never ever clip a finches wings. Finches are not parrots. They are not 'sit on your shoulder' or 'eat off your plate' type of birds. Those types of birds are called parrots. They are often bigger and louder than finches and they have large hook shaped beaks.
The reason you can get away with clipping a parrots wins is because that parrots can use it's nimble feet and strong beak to climb around the cage to gain access to food and drink when you are not home. A finch cannot do this. Sit and watch your finch for a moment. Notice how it hops and flutters its' wings to get around the cage. Notice how it will fly to the side of a cage, grab hold of the bars then slide down a bit? These are all very big clues that without the ability to fly the finch cannot get around the cage. If the food and water dish aren't on the ground you will quite litterly starve your finch to death if you clip the wings.
The only time a finch is ever 'tame' is when you hand raise it."

I wouldn't clip any bird's wings. I have 5 budgies and a cockateil and have had many birds in the past. None have ever been clipped and I can safely say that none have crashed into anything, except for my cockateil when his wings first grew back and he was learning to fly.
I would especially not clip a finches wings as they cannot climb and they are too small to jump very far without the help of their wings.

Why on earth would you want to? Keep them in their aviary or train them to come back! I work in a pet store and no, we would NOT clip a finches' wings, there is no reason.

I don't see any reason why you would? finches are pretty much just to look at and listen to. Their not really intended for holding. I'm not sure that a finch would be happy at all like that. we're not talking about a hand tamed bird here.

I don't understand why you would want to. Finches LOVE to fly. They're such little things, it's easier for them to get from perch to perch if they can fly. I would never have considered clipping mine.
Finches really aren't trainable, they just love to live their lives squeaking, flying, eating things like seed and special treats like broccoli and corn and apples, making nests out of thread and straw, and bathing. I'm wondering what would be the purpose of clipping them.

only do it after being trained how to do so...you can cause the birdie to bleed out if you cut the wrong thing.
