you reminded me of this quote.

" When principles that run against your deepest convictions begin to win the day, then battle is your calling, and peace has become sin; you must, at the price of dearest peace, lay your convictions bare before friend and enemy, with all the fire of your faith." - Abraham Kuyper

Although it is very necessary to not "turn the other cheek" to everything, it is also just as important not to become over sensitive to situations. Take, for example, the idea where some stores could not say "Merry Christmas," unless their customer said it to them first, but they could say, "Happy Holidays!" Well... the root of Holiday is Holy Day, which points back to Christianity. I believe that Christians should pick and choose their battles very carefully, but if they are not willing to die for them, they have no reason to be in them.

Most of Jesus' teaching call for the faithful to be meek...The Sermon on the Mount's beattitudes are a glorification of this: Blessed are the meek, the poor (in spirit depending on the particular gospel you read from), etc. Turn the other cheek plays into this as well.

Depending on your point of view, this can seem a call for weakness: most systems that place a higher value on meekness than aggression tend to be tools to keep people in line.

Even though I'm an atheist, let me throw this thought out there to you: It is entirely possible to interpret these things to mean that you can be strong in your faith and beliefs, while still maintaining "meekness". What I mean is: hold your faith in as high a regard as you need to, but just be willing to conceed the fact that some will disagree just as strongly. The meekness can be simply agreeing to disagree, and going your seperate ways.

Well my bible's a bit rusty, but I believe there are passages such as

- Do not forgive those who tresspass on you only 7 times, but 7 times 7.
- If someone slaps you on the cheek, turn it and offer the other one
- The meek shall inheriet the earth.

etc, etc. I'll post more as I think of 'em.

Being meek or weak is also a sign of strength.

Do not weaken to the foolish. They are fools in the eyes of Our Lord, you are not!

I think it might be that "turn the other cheek" thing.
