I am in the market for a new car. I'd prefer something with a V6 (except, I hate SUVs). I also travel quite a lot back and forth between Sacramento and LA which is about a 400 mile drive. My '99 mercury cougar is falling apart. Does anybody have any ideas of which cars can handle a lot of long distance traveling?

We do alot of driving between Sacramento and LA too, we've been doing it on our new 2006 V6 Hyundai Sonatas. They are built sturdily, have great warranties, and drive so smooth. We loved the first one so much we bought another one. If you're in Sacramento go to Maita Hyundai, people there are great and you can get a great deal if you are persistant. Good luck!

Believe it or not get yourself a 1993-1994 Chevy Lumina 3.1L. I have had mine for over 5 years now, put on more than 80,000, treated it like crap, ran it out of fluids many a time, and it still runs like a bat out of hell. I still have it but I bought a 99 Tahoe that I drive all the time because it is a 4X4, black and a SUV. Depending on how fast you drive, it can get anywheres from about 26-32 MPG. My ex wife drove it from OKC to Topeka while I drove the moving truck and it got a whopping 41 MPG. I know that you think that I am lying but I ain't. We filled it up in OKC and it still had just under 1/2 tank when we got to Topeka. It is only a 16 gallon tank. And that car has NEVER left me on the side of the road.

Get a V-6 Honda Accord. It's practical, fun to drive, and decent gas mileage for a V-6. Most of all, it will last for many, many miles. Mine has over 200k and it still runs very well.

You will never go wrong with a Honda. They are dependable, the re-sale value is high, and they will last for miles and miles.
