I have an enclosed heater motor unit (no htr core) and defroster ductwork. also additional plastic ductwork is this a defroster air circulation unit for a superbeetle?

It sounds like you might have the fresh (outside) air fan from a super beetle. It is designed to sit in the 'hood' and blow fresh air thru the dashboard and center when the two knobs on the dash are turned to the left and the fan is switched on.

It has no heater core (never did) only a fan encased in a roughly rectangular black plastic box about 16"x4"x8". It has an inlet on the bottom and two outlets about 2" in diameter on the top

That sounds like a good possibility, The Beetles didn't have a core (they are air-cooled) What heat they had was drawn off the exhaust manifolds through shields and ductwork similar to what you are describing. To the right person these could be a great restoration piece if they are in good shape. :)

What it may be is a gas heater. They made more than one style. One sat over top of the transmission. Other units sit in the trunk above the driver. There is also a fuel line connection. The gas heater is also called the auxilary heater. These units were in 67 bugs, and in vans.

Tie open you heater boxes too, that might help.
