Kudos to you for adopting the guy and letting him live where he's familiar with everyone/everything already. I don't think 7 is too old to get him neutered--neutering a male cat is fairly simple and not too invasive. However, at this point since he's been doing his intact-male thing for so many years already, he may never stop spraying and prowling the neighborhood now that he thinks it's al lhis territory. He will stop mating and courting and probably stop fighting with other males (but that's also a bit iffy). If you do get him neutered, you might want to look into microchipping him too while he's under anaesthesia.

As long as the cat is healthy he can be neutered at any age. 7 is only early middle age in cat terms. Neutering a very minor opperation & won't cause him much stress. It's much less invasive than a female spay - it's a man's world, even for cats! Well done for taking on this cat & for being sufficiently responsible to get him neutered. I hope you have many happy years together.

As long as the cat is healthy you should be able to get him neutered. However, be aware that in an older animal neutering may not stop the behaviors. He has been a tomcat his whole life he may still like to roam and if he tends to spray around the house he may still try peeing to mark his territory. I found a stray cat that was about 2 years old. We had him neutered but he still liked to roam. We were lucky that he was not much into marking inside the house. Before you make any decision talk to your veterinarian.

I am a cat lover and have had a few cats in my life. I neuter the boys as soon as possible. But its always good to have the vet.'s opinion. But mine is that if he is strong enough to go courting the girls He is probably strong enough for the operation. He is lucky to have you in his life right now and neutering will make a better home kitty of him.

He not too old to be neutered. 7 years isn't old for a cat. He is still in adulthood. If you have worries since you don't know as much about his history, talk to the vet about doing baseline bloodwork before surgery. Blookwork can help determine his health.
KUDOS for stepping up to help this kitty. That was very descent of you!

well done you, for adopting the cat. Get him neutered, he will be much more loving and although he might still spray for a couple of weeks, it won't smell as bad. He will soon stop. They are never to old

Personally I can't see a problem with neutering a cat at 7 yrs old, but I would strongly suggest asking your vet first and explaining everything to them so that they can give you the correct advice.

Check with your local vet to be sure, but I think the answer will be yes, go ahead and have him neutered. It's not cheap, but there are organizations which support spaying and neutering, and they often help pay for the operations.
What a good and caring neighbor you are!

It's never too late to neuter a cat, and your new kittie is just getting into middle age. He'll be fine having the surgery. Kudos to you for taking the kitty in.

The vet will take a blood test that tests to see if your cat is fit for anaesthesia... if he is then it should be fine.. if you book the appointment for the castration they'll probably ask you to come in in the morning first so they can take the blood test from your cat and make sure it is ok to go ahead.
if you think about it.. all rescue centres castrate their animals when they are up for adoption... whatever their age.
good luck :)
