Well, my guess would be that he was quoting a scriptural reference, and he didn't want to editorialize.

Satan was one of Jehovah’s angelic son’s.
One of his duties was the responsibly was to watch earth and its first inhabitants.
In Ezekiel, Satan is also described as someone as beautify as precious gems.
Satan, having once been perfect and deflected, or sinned, was no longer someone in good standing with Jehovah.
This account was Satan requesting Jesus to worship him. Jesus could not. If he did, mankind would have had no hope. But Jesus recognize Satan as the ruler of this world, someone alienated from Jehovah, therefore, Jesus was submitting himself to Jehovah and letting Jehovah take care of Satan.
Also, there in Genesis 3:15, 16, you see the very first prophecy mention in the bible.
The first, Jesus being bruised in the heel, happened in 33 CE when he died on the Stake. Jesus bruising of Satan in the head will come very shortly.

If you'll notice, Jesus never referred to Himself as God in the first person. Unless you take the "I AM" statements to be such, and I do. It's the hypostatic union, God in three persons. Christ came not as a reigning Lord, but a suffering servant to show us the way to the Father. He is our example, fully God and fully man. But He is no longer suffering, but sits in majesty at God's right hand. But if you insist on understanding an infinite God with a finite brain before you believe, well, just do the math. You can't put the ocean in a coke bottle, but you can receive an earnest.

Jesus is not God. Jesus is the son of God. An extention of the essence if you will. The fact is that Jesus was human, and a Godly being. He was to grow up among temptation and sin to show that you can still be pure and and free of sin in this world. Merely human, but the chosen son of God.

You relize how much chaotic and killing would go on if Jesus said yeah, I am God. I can worship myself and save myself from death and pain. But, that would just go to show us that god can't understand what it is suppose to be like to be human, and keep in mind he formed us after herself. It's a matter of faith.
