You are young, aren't you? Darlin', they do rotate in and out with typical tours of six months or a year. The last time US troops were exposed to longer overseas deployment on a large scale was WW II. It would be much better had we not downsized so drastically at the end of the Cold War, and they'd be able to rotate units at a rate of having them there about a quarter of the time instead of half the time, but that was done years ago, so we're just crying over spilt milk.
Almost everybody with an informed opinion thinks the strategic goals of our being over there are good goals. The split is between people who think we don't have enough forces to do the job and those who think it's still possible.

I would like all the troops home, it's hard on them and it's hard on us military families. At the same time.. this needs to be done. Some troops actually are proud of what they are doing over there and some at home would volunteer to go in a heartbeat. I'm proud of them, I do know that. If we leave Iraq then things will only get worse for them and for us. It's wrong to bring a country to war and to not follow through on it til that country is whole and can say that they are better after the Americans left then before the Americans came.

6 to 12 month deployment? Umm, try 12-18 month deployment with a possibility now of a 24 month one.

It would be nice to just bring everybody home, but then what happens to the Iraqis that we would be turning our backs on? In a perfect world we wouldn't have to send soldiers to war, but we know this world is far from perfect.

I am no expert about military strategy so I don't know if this "surge" will work or not, but I don't think it will get any worse.

There is no solution to this conflict as the sectarianism and guerrilla warfare is not beatable.
Bush is having a knee-jerk (apt term) reaction to the escalating violence and he is wrong people. He is wrong.
You've got to ask yourself a few questions.
1/ Who are the soldiers fighting?
Al-Qaeda? I think that has got very mis-leading and confusing. There are plenty of NON Al-Qaeda there taking up arms simply because they don't want the Yanks/Brits on their land AND because they are scared of the Sunnis/Shiites attacking them. But when they are killed? News flash "American/British hero kills another Al-Qaeda terrorist".
2/ What is the ultimate aim of this conflict ?
To crush Bin-Laden? I GUARANTEE you he is laughing his evil *ss off in some cave in the Hindu Kush over all this. This new front is playing right into his hands. Sure he has to keep a low profile these days with Special Ops. running all over the hills but he is just biding his time.
3/ Is the world safer?
This conflict is breeding more terrorists daily. People that were moderate before are being driven to join up seeing Muslim prisoners in Abu Gharrib. I have seen it in a dozen conflicts over the world. Trust me on this.

In a perfect world they wouldn't have to go in the first place. The reality is that if they all came home, there would be caos. Sorry to bust your bubble.

They should pull out all of our troops and drop an atom bomb on bagdad then carpet bomb the rest of iraq.
