It could. There were several occasions when the US had a significant advantage handed to our forces by NVA mistakes, and in each case "experts" decided we were at a disadvantage, spread doom and gloom, and called for an end to the war. The final indignity came when we had withdrawn, and the ARVN were holding their own against the NVA until the US Congress, sick of the war, cut off funding, and our allies simply ran out of bullets and gas. Shameful. We have every opportunity to cut their throats just as we did our previous friends'.
When we've had the political will, we've always done counterinsurgency well. The people who say these things are "unwinnable" simply don't know their US military history.

I have to agree with "Teacher" on just about all points. I, personally believe Bin Laden has either died of kidney faileur or is in Saudi Arabia under the protection of his family and the Royal family. When you invade a sovereign nation to try to force them to fall in line, with what you want, it's impossible to win. Vietnam was a civil war, and Iraq is about to become a civil war. The shites want revenge on the Sunni's and as soon as their "democratically elected" Prime Minister can get the US out, the bloodbath will commence. No-win situation.

News Break ! It already is.
There is no solution to this conflict as the sectarianism and guerrilla warfare is not beatable.
Bush is having a knee-jerk (apt term) reaction to the escalating violence and he is wrong people. He is wrong.
You've got to ask yourself a few questions.
1/ Who are the soldiers fighting?
Al-Qaeda? I think that has got very mis-leading and confusing. There are plenty of NON Al-Qaeda there taking up arms simply because they don't want the Yanks/Brits on their land AND because they are scared of the Sunnis/Shiites attacking them. But when they are killed? News flash "American/British hero kills another Al-Qaeda terrorist".
2/ What is the ultimate aim of this conflict ?
To crush Bin-Laden? I GUARANTEE you he is laughing his evil *ss off in some cave in the Hindu Kush over all this. This new front is playing right into his hands. Sure he has to keep a low profile these days with Special Ops. running all over the hills but he is just biding his time.
3/ Is the world safer?
This conflict is breeding more terrorists daily. People that were moderate before are being driven to join up seeing Muslim prisoners in Abu Gharrib. I have seen it in a dozen conflicts over the world. Trust me on this.

no. There are no forests left there to defoliate. Oh, BTW, the death rate for troops in Iraq is 39% lower than the death rate for males in the US, 18-29.

I think it is already like Vietnam, in the sense the our troops have lost confidence in the leadership, and don't know why they are still there fighting. Thanks to everyone in the military.
