Nice originally meant fastidious. Nowadays we think of a nice person as a pleasant one, an individual whom it is good to be with, who makes us feel good about ourselves.
Kind means benevolent, merciful, warm. If we have good parents they are kind to us, but their kindness can sometimes take the form of strictness as they strive to keep us on the straight and narrow. On such occasions they consider it more important to be kind than to be nice. Kindness does not always, therefore, involve softness. Niceness does.

A nice person is one who doesn't exactly do anything, but is just pleasant because they don't make waves or problems for others.
A kind person is someone who makes an extra special effort to uplift another person. My opinion.
