electric fence.

there are a couple things you can do:

1.)take him around the perimeter of the yard a couple of times. then let him go, as soon as he goes out side of the perimeter you took him around yell no go get him and bring him back in. this could take a lot of practice and you have to be stern.

2.)get an invisible fence. they don't work on all dogs which is a bad side. they can also be costly too. theres one that you don't need a cord underground for that costs about 150.00.

3.)tying up your dog isn't that bad if you do it the right way. take a very long rope and tie it between 2 trees. then attach a long leash or rope to that rope so he can run around and in between the two trees. he will probably be able to run a great distance with this.

hope these help. good luck!!
BTW i wouldn't leave your dog out during long periods of time for number 1 or any of these.

You could put a fence in your yard. Or you could install an electric fence. I personally would not want my dog to be outside without any restraint because he could see a cat or a squirrel and forget all about the Rules, and get lost or hit by a car. I think fences are great for dogs.

The invisible fence works well. You bury the wire around the edge of your property or the dogs boundary. After putting the collar on your dog, he will get a warning before he gets to close to the hidden wire. If he keeps moving to the boundary line, he will get a shock. The system works well, especially for those people without backyard fences.

I had this same problem with my English Setter/Golden Retriever mix. He's a rescue dog that had never lived inside before. He's a very good dog, but he had some problems with bolting and he's soooo fast.

Invest in a good quality electronic training collar ($150-300) and learn how to use it properly. It's done wonders for my boy. After a week or so, he no longer needed it.

Good luck.

You could put up a fence or get one of those doggy fences that are the flags that come with the collar and then when they are about to leave the yard it shocks them...those normally work pretty good.

Try a low fence. In some states there is a leash law anyway you should never leave your dog outside unless tied or in a fence. They could get hit by a car and alot do.

Well you could get a fence. Then you won't have to worry, and your dog gets some space to run around. You could get an invisible fence or one that you can see, doesn't matter, you just have to train your dog with an invisible fence.

You can make sure your yard has a surrounding gate, no openings. You may want to take it obediate school or for training classes. But I don't think that would help. You need to teach him/her to stop. Like keep and eye on her/him, and when they get close to the opening, walk , don't run, because they will run away and leave your yard, and tell them NO! and keep doing this. And when they are good, give it a treat for obediance skills!

If you don't have a fence, put one up - preferably a wooden fence, 6 feet high. Some dogs can easily climb a chain-link fence.

If you have a fence & he's getting out, please read the linked article below for tips.

Invisible fencing works great for many dogs. Try this website out.
