The UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) has a beautiful and insightful definition of lying.

They say that lying is "speaking with the intent to deceive".

If your intention in "not telling the whole truth" is to deceive, then its a lie.

well,i think it depends on whether someone could get hurt from you actually not telling the whole truth?I don't think its as bad as lying though? The consequences could be lots worse from telling a lie because it escalates

It is popular opinion that the "Sin of Omission" is just as bad as lying but, since I often engage in this practice, I tell myself that it isn't. Somehow, that I fail to actually fabricate facts/details, I think I'm not so bad as a liar.

Depends on the situation. If you tell your sister that you're pregnant, but don't mention that her husband is the father of the child.......then, yes, I'd say that's as bad as lying.

Yes and it hurts much worst in the end. You might as well be lying. I would let the rest out before it's too late.

My best friend kept a relationship secret from me. So I'd phone her Monday morning and say, what'd you do at the weekend, and she say "Oh not much.." etc.

When she did tell me, I was devastated that she couldn't trust me and had kept it secret. Needless to say, we're not friends any more. I could no longer trust her.
