Any suggestions? We are trying to keep him from yelping so much when he wants to be out but we need a break.

He is being crated or placed in his pen (which ever) when we can't watch him. He knows we are still around and wants out.

Sometimes I am trying to do something that would keep me from being able to supervise him. (ie if i need to use the computer to get some work done.)

Kennel training your dog is a very good way to go, but there are some things you have to do in order to make sure that it goes as smooth as possible. First, make sure to put a blanket in the kennel and maybe even a chew toy of some sort or even a toy that your dog favors. Second, make sure that your dog has been outside to potty before being place in the kennel. Third, place the kennel in a room where the dog cannot see or here you. Eventually your dog will come to feel that the kennel is a "safe zone" and is an okay place to be when you need a break. If your dog simply will not quit barking or whining try putting up a gate on the room you do not want your dog in and make sure that the kennel is in there with your dog, this will help your dog to realize that the kennel is not a bad place and that it is okay to spend time in there.

scottee25 is correct. i keep my dogs crate door open all the time and when he feels like it, he goes in and takes a nap. If you don't want your dog in the area where your computer is; gate it off. My house is divided off so my cats have an area that the dogs can't go and my dogs have the other side of the house that is doggy proofed. I don't want to keep my bedroom door shut all the time and I don't want the dogs to have free reign in that room nor where i have my computer, so i have a gate across my bedroom door and I use the door of the crate (cuz it's open all the time) to create a barrier so the dogs can come into the computer area. The crate is in the same room, inside the door and they have their beds there also, but with the door to the crate open, it rest against the wall so they can't come right up to me when I'm on this computer but they can be in the same room with me so all is happy. You should not make your dog feel "excluded" from the family as he is part of the family and dogs are pack animals by nature.

How long are you trying to keep him in there for? he may be confused as to why he's being crated if you are home. Heck, i'm a bit confused why you'd crate when yuor home... you have a dog to keep you company. Regardless....
If he is yelping in the crate, you can try to put a blanket over the crate so that he cannot see out and just use a word like 'nap time' or such, so that he knows its quiet time.
You can also try to give him an interactive toy, that will keep his mind busy while in the crate. Example, kong with cheerios, closed with peanut butter, frozen .. then given to him. will keep him busy for a while.

I guess my question to you would be why would you kennel him while you are home? The dog will not behave the way you want if he is not trained and shoving him in the kennel while you are home causes him frustration. You could easily have the dog in the same room as you while you are doing chores etc. if he was trained properly. Provide your dog with toys, and entertainment and a nice comfortable area to lay....next to your computer while you are working. He will become a much better companion if he is with you more and given the proper training and socializing.
I am not belittling you but keep in mind that if you shove him in the crate/kennel he will acquire habits that you probably will not like. Such as whining and crying...he only wants to be near you and the family.

Im confused why you lock up your dog while you're home. I have 2 dogs (one is a puppy) that i never lock up when i'm home. And I'm a full time college student who has homework and i'm taking a class over the internet. So i'm not sure why you feel you have to lock him up while you're on the computer. Would you lock a child up to 'get stuff done'? no. its the same for pets.

Stop being selfish and watch the dog. sure, the first few times you aren't keeping an eye on him at all times he'll probably get in to something or go potty in the house, but after a while he'll most likely lay by your feet or on the couch/floor. Mine do that and I can be doing homework for hours.

Why would you crate him if you are home....why would you get a dog if you dont want to pay attention to him

Try training him to sit at your feet when you are on the computer-thats what my dog does....

Crates are a safe place for dogs to retreat to or sleep in- not for them to be locked up when YOU need a break...

Do you have kids, where do you lock them up when you need a break? Dont mean to sound rude but geeeesh....

Good luck, I hope you find something that works.

Put a an old peice of clothing that you wore in with him the scent of you should make him feel less lonely! Or fill a 2 liter pop bottle with hot water and wrap in a rag or the above peice of clothing and put it in with him.Or a chew toy that will keep him busy. If you want to be a little tougher keep a squirt gun by you and when he starts to whine squirt water at him and Yell NO!! so he realizes it is wrong, I don't like this method but it has worked with other pets. Good Luck!

Your dog should only be crated when you cannot supervise him. Such as when you go to work or sleeping. He should never be crated when people are around him. If you crate him while you are sleeping, try placing the crate as far from your bedrooms as possible. Also, never use the crate as a punishment. Eventually he should become accustomed to the crate and if you leave it open, he may actually go in iteven when people are around (It should be his safe place).

Get some toys that you can put food in, like a KONG. Put a dog biscuit inside and he will spend hours trying to get it out. You can also fill it with peanut butter. He is probably bored and if he knows you are there wants attention.

Buy him one of those chew balls that hold treats the ones that they really have to work on and keep it for only when you put her in the cage. It should keep her occupied and it will become a real treat for her if you only use it for this purpose. Don't yell at her or she'll just yowl back. Good luck
