I've noticed this on most of the photo glossies, and even in competitions the judges seem to favour this type of sky (which is usually done in photoshop). Why is that? It doesnt look natural to me, it looks sinister. You can still get dramatic scenes without this nuclear touch.

I think the sky adds a lot to the photo. But it has to be right for the mood of image. For example, you wouldn't want a group of rabbits sitting in a field with an apocalyptic sky behind them. In some cases though, a dramatic sky can really add to the shot, making it look sinister and powerful.

It really is just a matter of personal preference.
