Before you buy anything or bargain anything, you should make up the price for your mind - what is the price you prefer for the product. Then ask the seller for 60 or 70% of the your acceptable price.

For example: You find a nice shirt and you think it should cost you around 100 Bht, You ask the seller for the price.
Seller say - 150Bht,
You think that it should be 100Bht, you should ask for 70% of 100Bht so, You should say - 70Bht
Seller may say - 120 Bht, 100 Bht or give you 70Bht!!

If the seller doesn't give you 100Bht or below, you should keep bargaining with little higher price.
You ask - 90Bht or 100Bht

Continue doing it until you get your perfect price.

BUT

IN my opinion, if you are tourist, don't waste time for 50Bht bargaining. You pay a lot for the flight to boarden you world, see difference things and experience new culture. You shouldn't spend your half an hour for 50Bht lower. (Or if it's a new experience that you want once in your life, then it's fine)

I always think that 20Bht is more important for them. 20Bht can be their meal, their children snacks or many things. I don't think it's stupid if you give them profit as you get the stuffs with your acceptable price. They sell for profit, it's their living.

To all the good advice given I would add:

If you don't haggle at all, the next person will find the price a bit higher. Play the game, try to knock a few baht off the price. Just don't try to screw every possible bit of discount out of them.

As for the mechanics, you will find they usually show you a value on a calculator. enter a different value for your bid. This bypasses almost any language barrier.

when u go shopping right? it's easy lol for example, the price of a T-shirt u want is 200 Baht, u can ask them "170 ok?" or "180 dai mai?", since they may not understand english much. it will mean something like "can the price be reduced to 180?". have fun!

first u ask how much? (tau lai?)
then you say very expensive (peng peng!)
then you say dont want, very expensive. (mai au, peng peng)
usually cut the original price to half price then slowly increase until both of you accept.
