When waiting behind a stationary car in the dark, do the brake lights of the car in front irritate you? I always use my handbrake when stationary to spare the car behind me a blinding dose of red light. It's so easy with an auto box to just sit and wait with your foot on the brake, but is it polite?

It isn't polite and it's not how you are taught to drive either! It's a bad habit probably brought on by either laziness or a deep desire to move on as swiftly as possible once the opportunity presents itself, or both. It's not showing consideration for other road users.

I find it very annoying, especially if it is one of those newer models that have extra brake-lights high up in the middle or anywhere else around the back windshield. Those ones are sooo bright. I can see where it might be useful to have brake-lights for extra visibility if you are the last car waiting, but this obviously can't apply if someone else is already waiting behind you.

doesnt really irritate me as much as the bastard up my a**e with full headlights on.
But I have waited patiently for the car infront to move on when the lights have changed only to find after the second change of lights he still hasnt driven off and what I was seeing was a car parked near the lights in a narrow road at night was actually empty! I'd mistaken the headrest for a driver's bonce. I felt a right idiot.

Brake lights are there for a reason. They tell them people behind you that you are slowing down or are at a full stop. I've never found brake lights to be blinding, only headlights.

What I want to know is who taught you to use your hand brake at a stop light?!

I took Young Drivers which is one of the best driving schools here in Canada, and the only time you use the Emergency brake (a.k.a. hand break) is in an emergency. For example when you regular breaks aren't doing their job and you need to stop now! Your also suppose to use it while parking on any type of incline. That's really it.

Using your hand brake while stopped at a light instead of your regular brakes is just asking for someone to rear end you.

The brake lights help not only the car behind you to know where you are, but also the drivers of any other cars that might be around.

Brakes lights are there on the car to alert me that the car I'm coming up to is actually stopped - so no they don't bother me - and I've been driving for well over 30 years (maybe I'm just use to them).

Personally, I would rather see the red brake lights on -- that is the safety function of those lights to let other drivers know (me) that the car is stopped. Especially at night when my vision is not at it's best, a car stopped but not showing it's brake lights might look moving to me.

This is a question of safety; therefore it would be impolite to not use one's brake lights.

You may perhaps have a light sensitivity issue that you may want to consult your physician about.

Totally agree. Once the car behind has stopped and you are both staionary there is no need whatsoever to keep your brake lights on.

It depends on the situation, if i'm going up a hill and the traffic slows right down but moves every few seconds, I tend to keep my foot on the break and probably blind the driver behind me in the process! If i'm on a straight bit of road and stopped i just tend to keep my foot on the clutch and accelerator, bad i know! Not one for using the handbreak unless I have to :S

You stop, put on the Handbrake, release the footbrake, the brake lights go out and some stupid old git thinks the lights have changed smashes his wreck into gear and rear ends you.
Put the rear Fogs on as well I say.
