A manufacturer sends out his candy tubes in boxes of 160. They are packed in eight rows of 20 each, and exactly fill the box. Could he, by packing differently, get more than 160 in the box? If so, what is the greatest number he could add? At first sight, it sounds absurd to expect to get more candy tubes into a box that is exactly filled, but a moment's consideration should give you the key to the paradox.

He's putting round tubes into a square box. It's the along the lines "trying to fit a square peg into a round hole" (you get the point). Perhaps he could package them into rectangular boxes instead of tubes. Example of 1" diameter tubes take up a space of 1 square inch, but only really need 0.785 squre inches. That's 21.5% wasted space. 21.5% of 160 is 34.4. Round that down to 34 and he should be able to fit 194 total.

well that would mean he has a flat box 20 side by side in eight rows, if he would stand them up he would fit 160 tubes standing up, so 160 times 20 is 3200, no one said the box had to close

This question cannot be answered without more information. What are the dimensions of the box and an individual tube?

You said the box was full with 160. So no more can fit.
