Older dogs are more prone to it, as are young ones that are fed improperly or have eaten something they shouldn't have.

If your dog shows any signs of illness, he must be brought to the veterinarian immediately, since there could be a blockage of the intestinal tract.

The following will help your dog:

Add canned pumpkin to every meal. The dosage can range from 1/8 tsp for a small dog to 1/2 tsp for a large dog, depending upon results. Start with 1/4 tsp for a medium and large dog, increasing the amount depending on stool results.

Or you can do the following:

Add wheat bran to every meal. Follow the same dosages as for the pumpkin. For increased taste, combine it with brewer's yeast.

Put your dog on a high fiber diet recommended by your veterinarian, changing foods slowly.

Add water to the food.

Keep the water dish clean and full of fresh water, to encourage your dog to drink more.

Supplement with brewer's yeast.

Supplement with acidophilus daily.

Supplement with folic acid.

Increase the dog's exercise.

Add vegetable enzyme to the food.

Dogs don't get constipated very often and it's not always easy to tell when they are. Dogs that are straining often have diarrhea. If it's constipation, there will obviously be little to show for her efforts.

You can help by feeding her high-fiber foods such as canned pumpkin. Just mix some with her regular food until she is "regular" again. Canned green beans are also high in fiber. Raw or cooked vegetables can help too, but avoid giving her dairy or other high-fat foods which can cause diarrhea.

Try mixing some Metamucil in her food - it's a natural laxative. Half a teaspoon for small dogs and two teaspoons for larger dogs. Avoid giving Metamucil if your dog has a history of colitis or other bowel conditions though.

Exercise such as regular walks (15 to 20 min. twice a day) can also help towards keeping her regular.

I've seen yogurt and olive oil do wonders for dogs with this problem. Stir about half of a little container of yogurt and half a capfull of olive oil into her food once a day. One-quarter can of green beans can also provide some extra fiber.

The olive oil is also great for her skin and fur. I've seen it do miracles for dogs with problem dry skin and allergies.

If all else fails, take her to the vet. Hope this helps!

More often than not, when dogs are straining to defecate, it's because they have diarrhea, not because they are constipated. In that case, don't feed her for 12-24 hours (water is okay). If she really does have hard stool, or a head time getting it out, you can add fiber or stool softeners like DSS to her diet. Either way, she should see a vet if it doesn't resolve in a day.

IF your dog is truly constipated (a vet could tell you) and has a blockage of the intestines, the longer you wait for proper treatment the weaker the intestines will get. Once weakened it could kill the dog.

If she's still eating try putting a small amount of castor oil on her food.
