PT means prothrombin time while INR means international normalized ratio. PT is a measure of the time it takes for you blood to clot. Clotting of blood involves a lot of factors and prothrombin or factor II is one of these factors. Its relation to invasive procedures is that invasive procedures have a higher risk of complications especially bleeding. The more prolonged the PT or the higher the INR, the longer it takes for bleeding to stop and this will get the doctor/dentist and the patient in a lot of trouble. a PT/INR test measures how fast your blood clots. It is important to know before an invasive procedure due to the amount of bleeding that is possible. If your blood is too thin, it takes longer to clot.

In addition.....

INR is "International Normalized Ratio" and it standardizes the results of essentially the same test used to determine the PT. It eliminates lab variables. The "normal" value is 1.0, meaning that the test subject's blood clots are the same time as teh lab normal. 2.0 would mean that it took twice as long for the subject's blood to clot as the lab normal. Etc.

pt stands for prothombin time and it's a test to see how thin your blood is and if it's too thin and an invasive procedure is done you might bleed to death!!
