The Canaanites practiced worshiping of things like fertility/sex, and seasons, and gods and goddesses that they came up with on their own, turning away from what God had said--that he was the only God to worship. So they were worshipping the very things that God had himself created, instead of *him*!
And things like sacrificing babies to some of their idols in rituals involving fire did not make him happy, either, one would think.

They were polytheistic and fertility-based. The religion of the Canaanites was firstly an agricultural religion, with pronounced fertility motifs. Their main gods were called the Baalim (Lords), and their consorts the Baalot (Ladies), or Asherah (singular), usually known by the personal plural name Ashtoret.

If you're referring to the sack of the "Promised Land" by the Israelites I don't think it had anything to do with good vs evil. It was simply a land grab. Similar to what Europeans did to the native Americans.

They were Jews. God just didn't like them because Ham saw Noah drunk and naked.
Ham caught Noah drunk and told his brothers. When Noah woke up he cursed Ham's son Canaan.

"He" needed to get rid of them in order to deliver the "promised" land. Any excuse is good enough when it comes to a religious war, right?
