Menthol is the active ingriedient in Ben Gay...it is purely an anesthetic and does nothing to help anything "heal" faster. The reason you cannot feel it is because the heel area does not absorb as well as other areas of your body such as your palms...if you cannot feel it, there is no point in using it.
If it is a fresh sprain, you best treatment is a cold pack wrapped in a towel for about 10 minutes every couple hours. If you need something for pain control, talk to your physician about what is best for you.

Possibly there are not that many nerve endings in the part that you step on. Try to isolate the part that does feel it, cause the nerves could be located somewhere else.
Like behind the ankle, and above the heel right where the tendon, itself, is.
There are also other techniques. Ice. Bandages. Elevate feet to relieve swelling.
I think if it is possible to remain on them, do so as much as you can without pain so that you don't lose muscle.
By all means, see a doctor if you haven't already for that.
Also, try www.webmd.com Good Luck, and Hope you heal fast!

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

I had that prolem to (I was using IcyHot though) were if I applyed it I could not feel it. Then I started Wrapping it up in a Ace bandge(Not to tight though) and I was able to feel it working. Now I do not know if it is still work even with out the feeling but you may what to try what I suggeted but just remember DO NOT use it with a heating pad and if you wrap it not to tight because then you will 1 cut the blood flow off and 2 if to tight it may cause a burn to the skin. If that still does not work then I sugget change products and going to IcyHot that stuff Works. (At first it start of cold and then it heat up)(Cold to Dull the Pain Hot to relax it) Hope I helped. ~lovedolphins90~
