I took six years of French classes in high school and college, and I was pretty near fluent, but it's been a couple of years, and now I can only handle simple conversations. How can I get back my proficiency without paying a tutor?

Get a book (French Made Simple) and go through the exercises, listen to French music, and watch French films with subtitles en francais. Then you can go on a trip to France or a French-speaking country (Belgium, Switzerland, Monaco, etc.). It worked for me.

Go to Club Med for a get away. It is French owned and a lot of people there speak French - You can fall back on English too if you need to AND have a fun vacation while cleaning the rust out of your 2nd language!! They have single, couples and family villages and are all inclusive- Bon Voyage!! Fabulous!!

Watch french movies.
Look if you can catch a french SAT tv channel.
Find a french person on your town with whom you can talk (check that s/he *is* french, do not believe those who think that they know french ;) ).
Search for a correspondent in France with whom you can talk at the phone (many people here can make phone calls to US for free).

Watch a few French shows or movies to warm-up your brain. Once you hear some French, you'll start thinking French when you want to say somethin in French.

Take a class at a public college, it shouldn't be too awfully expensive, And if you were fluent before, it shouldn't take you long to brush up & be fluent again!
