A friend of mine, has a son who takes Ritilin for his ADD, she found out that he was crushing the pill, and putting it in his nose, she asked me if this was harmful, but I have never heard of taking a pill this way. Does anyone know if this would alter the effects of his med? Would it cause problems with his sinuses? Seems srange to me.

Yes, I also have a nephew who actually "snorts" crushed pills--several different drugs, in fact--he says it hits him "quick and hard" so there you have it. There are several good answers already but I wanted to add this.
It is already a problem, just trying to intervene *effectively* to get him to stop this will probably be a lifelong battle of will for him now that the genie is out of the bottle. This is a situation in which the boy's loved ones must be prepared to deal with this as a chronic disease. This is rampant! Best of wishes to those who have to deal with this problem.

Her son is snorting the Ritalin in attempt to get a quick high from it. Ritalin has an extremely high risk of being abused since it is methamphetamine- a central nervous system stimulant. His mother should seek help immediately on how to talk to her son about the fatal risks of drug abuse. She should also seek counseling for herself. Two helpful groups are Alanon and Naranon.
I am in recovery from addiction and alcoholism. It's not an easy road, but getting as much information as possible on how to deal with it can make it much easier! Good Luck to all of you!!!

Yes it is harmfull. Crushing the pill is fine if you swallow it, then the drug will take its appoapreate course, but crushing it and trying though the noise, Your in for a disaster!

Oh yes.I am an X heroin addict and ritalin was also a drug of choice.We would crush them then inject them and look out.So I'd do something about this serious problem.
