The mm references it's zoom range. The 18-135 can zoom in further. Read reviews on the lenses before you choose. If the 18-55 is the kit lens that comes with a couple of the other Nikons. It's pretty cheap and the build quality is pretty poor, but the sharpness and colour from the lens is surprisingly good. I have not used the 18-135
If you can, I would recommend getting the 18-200 VR lens

Focal length. 18 means that they both zoom out for a wide angle shot like a scenic and think of the second number as magnification. The 135 will zoom in closer than the 55.
You be vey happy with the 18-135 a very versatile lens.

Ive got the D80 w/ the 18-135 and it works very well. The zoom is considerably more than the 18-55. And f/3.5 is better ... Good choice if your going to buy a 1 lens "kit" to start with

betwin 45 to 55 mm the lens will show what you see, not closer and not far. it is like you see. the shorter de lens, you will see a wither image, it will be like step rear withaut moving your foot.the longer the lens, you will feel closer. how much? if 50 is your normal view when you are at 10 meters of the object, 25 will bee like you are at 20 meters and 18 like 30 meters further. so 100mm. will be like you stand 5 mtr. from im, and 150 like 2.5 mtrs. it is ,y hope ,simple, and by the way, you buy a very god camera. whish you enjoy your camera.and have a nice time.

I agree with all above.
I'd choose the 18-135, if I was only buying one lens.
The suggestion for the 10-200 is a good one, but good luck finding it! I see it going for over $900 on eBay. The list price is $750.
