Opus Dei are definitely an existing association.
Here are some facts:
• Controversial Catholic organisation Opus Dei founded in Spain in 1928
• Group's global membership of 85,000 includes 50 members in Scotland
• Numerates practice regular physical discipline such as whipping
It was founded by Msgr. Jose Maria Escriva de Balaguer.
There is debate however, as to the existence of the Priory of Sion.

Opus Dei is a real organization. The Priory of Sion existed at one point in time, and may or may not still exist as a secret organization, but probably doesn't.

The Priory began sometime during the crusades I believe but faded into obscurity very soon afterwords, until a man named Plantard made false claims that the Priory still existed and that he was the Grand Master.

According to ask.com, Opus Dei has a website. www.opusdei.org. Not positive about Priory of Sion, I heard it was invented in the 1970's by a couple of guys, I think one of them wrote the book Holy Grail, Holy Blood, I've looked up some of the names that were claimed to be members of Priory of Sion and noticed that most all were alchemists, Leonardo Da Vinci, Issac Newton, Nicholas Flamel (the guy from HP and the Sorcerers Stone), among many others.

Yes and yes. The Priory of Sion was formed in 1952 to spread the hoax that Plantard was next in line for the British crown. Opus Dei is a Roman Catholic organization for laymen in which members vow to lead devout and pius lives according to a modest rule of prayer.

If you are looking for the organizations described in the DaVinci Code, no and no.

Priory of Sion? Fiction.

Opus Dei? Yes, but they are a liturgical and religious fellowship of lay and clergy alike...nothing nefarious.

There are many secret societies, and many of them have their roots in religions. I am confident that the two you refer to are real (though I don't think you have exact spelling). As I am not a member of either, I must speak as an outsider. "Opus Dei" gives us a strong hint, for it is "work of 'god'" in the Latin. Who do we know who speaks Latin?

I think it's just a myth. Originating in other secret societies such as the Masons.
