Islam has a prohibition against idolatry. Images of the Prophet are not accepted as to ensure that the faithful are not tempted towards Idolatry.
Several Christian sects have similar attitudes.

Muslims are not allowed to make any pictures of any prophet no matter how the prophet is depicted. If the prophet is depicted in a negative wasy it is obvious y that would be offensive and if the prophet was depicted in a positive way then some people might start worshipping the prophet instead of God.

That will still be offensive.
We are not allowed to portray God, or Muhammad, or any other Prophet.
Pictures/Drawings are not allowed in Islaam.
It is clear that image-making is one of the blameworthy actions of the ignorant which Islam came to oppose. It is well established from clear, saheeh mutawaatir ahaadeeth that it is not allowed, and that the one who does this is cursed and is warned of torment in Hell, as in the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Abbaas which is attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “Every image maker will be in Hell, and a soul will be given to every image which he made so that it might torment him in Hell.” (Narrated by Muslim).
This applies to all images of animate created beings, humans and others. There is no difference between three-dimensional and other images, whether they were taken with cameras or produced by painting, engraving or other methods, because of the general meaning of the ahaadeeth.
Whoever claims that photographs are not included in the general prohibition or that the prohibition applies only to three-dimensional images and those that cast a shadow is making a false claim, because the ahaadeeth concerning that are general in meaning. There is no differentiation between one kind of image and another. The scholars have clearly stated that the prohibition applies to photographs and other kinds of pictures, such as Imaam al-Nawawi, al-Haafiz ibn Hajar and others. The hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah concerning the story of the curtain is clear, and what it indicates is that an image which is on a curtain is not three dimensional, rather it is a kind of drawing on cloth, but despite that the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) counted it as trying to match the creation of Allaah
And also it's mocking the image of God, or Muhammad or a Prophet, despite the fact who it is, it's very offensive. We find it very offenxive seeing pictures and images of Jesus in churches and statues and the likes. It's disgusting, portaying a Prophet, a Messenger of Allaah as something which he weren't.
Also, making pictures of the Prophet Muhammad, will lead people into putting his picture up everywhere, and then putting his picture infront of themselves while praying, and soon into worshipping it.
So there are several reasons.
I hope you it makes things clear for you.
Also, here is something which will deffinetly make things clear.
The reason why there is no picture of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)

I think it's mostly offensive depictions that they don't like. The controversy that made a big splash not too long ago was a picture of Muhammad with a bomb for a turban. I don't know of any other situation where they were offended. I believe that they, themselves aren't allowed to make depictions of Muhammad due to their religious beliefs, but they don't expect non Muslims to follow their religious beliefs.

this is good question..it is widely believed that to sketch a picture of holy prophet Mohammad or even any prophet like moses or Jesus is a sin in Islam..may be the reason is while sketching..artist make a picture that not belongs to that holy prophet.. or due to a fear that due to utmost affiliation with holy prophet, people may start to worshiping the picture..it is just a matter of their utmost respect for all holy persons..so they don't even think of making a picture..due to utmost respect for them.

It is possible to deviate from the true teachings of Islam. Some people may get too emotional and even start worshiping those pictures. The love we have for our Prophet is enough for us.

We are not allowed to make pics of Muhammad(pbuh), Hey Btw i don't like even Jesus paintings.......even he should not be potrayed. Well there are multidimentions of it, We can't imagine them when we hav'nt seen them by ourself.secondly it may lead to idol worshiping, which we can see happening in christainity to some extent after jesus is displayed according to their imagination.
And cartoon?? So ofcourse its offensive !! we can't tolerate our prophet to be insulted that way !!

I think the words that everyone are grasping for with regard to Muslims are 'brain' and 'washed'. Pity it's the only thing that's washed...

It is offensive in either manner because we have not seen our prophets be them in any religion,so we should not presume there looks,it is disrespectful because they could look the complete opposite to what we perceive.

Well of course of mohammed was portrayed in a positive manner there wouldn't b so much rage.but the point is Islams recognize all prophets as holy and believe they should be above sarcasm and even ordinary portraits. Not just mohammed all prophets like Moses & Jesus. It's out of respect for them that's all.
