In the state of New Jersey, volunteer EMTs and firemen are authorized the use of blue lights in their personal vehicles. They must be certified and approved by both their departments and the state before using the lights. The lights are purchased and installed at their own expense, and the use of the lights does NOT authorize them to break ANY traffic laws when responding to an incident.

Amber lights are ONLY used by towtrucks and highway construction/safety vehicles. Civilians are NOT authorized the use of amber lights.

Red lights are strictly reserved for fire trucks, ambulances, and police vehicles, although the State Police and some local agencies are starting to switch to the unofficial national standard of red and blue lights.

The paperwork can be obtained either at your department or the NJ DMV.
