My mum used to think we were the height of sophistication eating these. On the Chop Suey you had to deep fry these noodle things to put on top. My favourite was the paella.

Absolutely! I am sure my long term health will be impacted by the ingredients and e numbers that went into them....I think to add to the 1970s perception of sophistication you had your Vesta with a glass of Blue Nun....those were the days!

Loved them all, except chicken curry - partiularly liked the Chinese and Paella, especially the magical fried crispy noodles! Keep thinking of trying a pack again but doubt if I'd still enjoy them - especially don't like the idea of microwaving instead of putting on cooker top for 20 minutes in a couple of saucepans and/or !!! Not the same!

The heght of decadence in the late sixties, early sevnties; a tad artificial by today's standards, but there were very few take-aways open, and the limit of foreign food available was this dehydrated stuff which got boiled alive in a saucepan for an eternity.

Thing is, it was good, but do you remmber the crispy noodles that often accompanied this gloop - fat-laden flavourless quavers which burned easily in the chip pan, as no one had a deep fat fryer.

I remember them very much - chop sued was easily the best one and I still miss the flavor of it. Thankfully the chow mien is still available and it had the crispy noodles as well. But Chop Suey was so good I really wish it could be brought back.

Heh that Chow Mein, Paella, Beef and Chicken Curries.

Do you remember frying the crispy noodles for the chow mein? Such exotic excitement.

God yes! Especially the curries! Glutinous and full of raisins! The main reason why I got into authentic Indian cuisine. Not one of the best inventions of the 60s.
You just spoilt my day! There are some things which are best forgotten.

yes i know what you mean, my dad used to cook the beef curry and chow mein every saturday, they were great, never had paella, i haven'd had any for years but i saw one in adsa the other day and cooked it, i ended up with hard rice i could break my teeth with and burnt crispy noodle things, but i still ate it!

Yep, years ago, used to love them, used to make one up when I got in from the pub. Mother always got 1 or 2 in for me.
