I can understand the feelings of Muslims on issues like veil, being photographed and many other issues which may be prohibited in Islam. What I can't understand is why don't they also demand the Islamic Criminal Code like chopping off their hands for theft etc?

In countries where the criminal code and the civil code are BOTH derived from Islamic law some of those punishments still exist Even into the 1980's in Saudi Arabia such things were still done. The problem is that outsiders will come in and make troubles for enforcing some of those penalties. Human rights groups from outside the country, and outside the religion will make such a fuss that some international body will ahve to step in and finally say that these punishments cannot be used any more.

This is why I firmly support the idea that a person, or group of persons can and SHOULD ONLY be answerable to the authority of their religious belief and NO OTHER OUTSIDE authority at all. This applies to countries that have a religious based legal system down to groups and individuals. IF someone is of a particular religion the ONLY someone that has authority within that religion can or SHOULD have any say over the nature of that persons conduct or behavior, and ONLY someone of authority within that religion can decide on any punishment or even IF such punishment is warranted. THAT is what true religious freedom is and until it exists as such there will ALWAYS be the problems and conflicts on every level that exist as a result of trying to force every religion to act in the same manner with complete disregard to their sovreign rights and differences.

Its because of the western influence on the Middle East. Most countries that are less leniant one Sharia law, like Lebanon and Turkey, have been heavily influence by European countries like England and France. The modern state of Turkey was actually founded on westernization of the country.
