Well, lets see. A REAL prerunner, is a vehicle set up with off road suspension and extra power that race teams use to "prerun" a race course like the BAJA 500 or BAJA 1000. They do this to familiarize themselves with the course BEFORE running the actual race, and to check out the GPS equipment, so that the race will run with less mistakes and so they don't get lost so easily.

The Toyota Prerunner is just a model designation, not a real prerunner. It may have fat tires and maybe some stronger shocks, but in factory form, prerunning is not really a good idea.

Prerunners are 2wd drive trucks with the suspension, skid plates, etc from a 4wd.

The prerunner version of a vehicle is a 2WD with 4WD suspension and sits at the same height as a 4WD but isn't 4WD. Also offers offroad options as the 4WD model.

It is a 4WD wanna be, with the 4WD suspension & frame.
The tacoma prerunner is built on the same chassis as the 4runner.
